Mercasol rust protection — what we use, and where to buy it

Every car we rustproof at Angels Garage is treated with Mercasol. People often ask what it actually is, why we use it rather than something cheaper, and where they can get it themselves. Here is the straight answer.

What Mercasol is

Mercasol is made by Auson AB in Kungsbacka, Sweden. Auson have been making corrosion protection since 1928, in a country that salts its roads harder than we do and has spent a long time working out what actually stops a car rotting.

It is not one product. It is a system, and the parts do different jobs:

  • Cavity wax — a thin, creeping wax that is sprayed inside sills, doors and box sections, where rust almost always starts and where you cannot see it.
  • Underbody coating — a tougher, thicker coating for the floor, wheel arches and chassis, taking the stone chips and the winter salt.
  • Penetrating primer — goes onto surface rust that has already started, before the coating goes over it.
  • Sound deadening — the same family of products, used to quieten panels and arches.

Why it matters on Irish roads

Salt, damp and a coastline on three sides. Cars here rust from the inside out, and by the time it shows on the outside the repair is welding rather than prevention. Treating a car properly is cheap next to cutting and welding a sill two winters later.

Two ways to get it done

We do it for you

We treat cars, vans and commercials here in Castlebar — the car goes up on the lift, cavities are sprayed through the factory access points with a proper pressure gun and lance, and the underside is cleaned and coated. If there is existing rust, we deal with that first. See our rust repair and protection page, or ring us on 089 603 8318.

You do it yourself

If you would rather do your own, we sell the full Mercasol and Noxudol range through our own shop at mercasol.ie — aerosols for small jobs, 1 litre cans, and professional sizes and application equipment for workshops. Collection from Castlebar, or ask us about delivery.

If you are not sure which product does what, ring us or send a message through the shop. It is a short conversation and it saves buying the wrong tin.
